Matthew 25:1-13
Why the flame goes out
1. There is no oil.
Oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit.
If you are a Christian, you receive His Spirit. (Romans 8:9)
2. You have the wrong oil.
Our society promotes many systems of belief that we are told to dedicate our lives to. (II John 7-9)
The Bible is our authority on all matters of faith and life.
3. There was not very much oil to begin with.
Many Christians never get past the point of being spiritual babies.
It's not a matter of getting more of the Holy Spirit, but letting the Holy Spirit have more of you. (Eph. 3:17-19)
4. You don't have any oil in reserve.
Many Christians presume upon God and discover they were not as close to Him as they thought they were.
The way to build spiritual reserve is to remain faithful to your spiritual disciplines at all times. (Heb. 12:11)
Perhaps we should live our lives as if today were the day Jesus is returning.
