Matthew 5:13-15; 13:31-33
Each element reveals something about the condition of the world in which we live.
Light
1. The world is in darkness without the light of Jesus in our lives.
Light overcomes darkness, no matter how dark it is. (John 1:4-5)
Each person that shines his or her light eliminates some of the darkness.
Salt
2. The world is deteriorating.
Our standards just keep lowering.
Our goal as Christians is to work toward preserving things that are of true value in the name of Christ.
3. Our world needs seasoning.
The salt the world needs can be gained by Christians sharing their spiritual experience, their wisdom and knowledge, the lessons that God has shown them. (Mark 9:49; I Peter 4:12)
4. Our world needs purified.
Christians who allow themselves to be exposed to too much of the world will find that their salt doesn't do anything.
Leaven
5. Just a little bit of something can have a radical effect.
If you change your little corner of the world, you have changed the whole world.
