During the Depression, William Stidger was in a restaurant with friends who were all talking about how terrible things were: suffering people, rich people committing suicide, joblessness. The conversation got more miserable as it went on.
A minister in the group interrupted. “In two or three weeks I have to preach a sermon on Thanksgiving Day,” he said. “What can I say that’s affirmative in a period of world depression like this?”
Stidger felt the Spirit of God saying to him, “Why don’t you give thanks to those people who have been a blessing in your life and affirm them during this terrible time?”
He began to think about that. He remembered a schoolteacher who was very dear to him, a wonderful teacher of poetry and English literature who had gone out of her way to put a great love of literature and verse in him, which has affected all his writings and his preaching. So he sat down and wrote a letter to this woman, now up in years. It was only a matter of days until he got a reply in the feeble scrawl of the aged:
My dear Willy,
I can’t tell you how much your note meant to me. I am in my 80s, living alone in a small room, cooking my own meals, lonely, and like the last leaf of autumn lingering behind. You’ll be interested to know that I taught in school for more than fifty years, and yours is the first note of appreciation I ever received. It came on a blue, cold morning, and it cheered me as nothing has done in many years.
“I’m not sentimental, but I found myself weeping over that note,” Stidger said. Then he thought of a kind bishop, now retired, who had recently faced the death of his wife and was all alone. This bishop had taken a lot of time giving Stidger advice and counsel and love when he first began his ministry. So he sat down and wrote the old bishop. In two days a reply came back.
My dear Will,
Your letter was so beautiful, so real, that as I sat reading it in my study, tears of gratitude fell from my eyes. Before I realized what I was doing, I rose from my chair and I called my wife’s name to share it with her, forgetting she was gone. You’ll never know how much your letter has warmed my spirit. I have been walking around in the glow of your letter all day long.
David A. Seamands, “Instruction for Thanksgiving,”
Are there people you know who would be touched by your letter of gratitude for how they have helped you in your life? Why don't you let them know?
With Love, Pastor Scott

There Will be no Church Activities
Wednesday
November 27, 2024
There will be a special business meeting after church on November 3. The purpose of this meeting is to vote approval on the proposed 2025 church budget, the proposed slate of officers and board members for 2025, and the appointment of the Pulpit Search Committee. All these proposals were handed out at the quarterly business meeting.
We are off to an exciting start at SRBC’s Awana club.
It’s not too late for kids to join AWANA for this club year. Awana is for children age 2 – 12th grade. We meet on Wednesday nights from
6:05 – 7:30 PM. It’s a joyful time! Don’t miss the fun!
Wow, it’s November already, the trees are showing off their new colors and the leaves are beginning to decorate the ground.
We are a busy club on Wednesday evenings. Our clubbers are busy learning, laughing, singing, and enjoying Club. We’re in the season of Thanksgiving.
With that said Thank you to all who support our club through prayer, encouragement, and faithfully showing up and helping the experience happen each week!
October was a busy month in the life of our club. On October 16 clubbers and leaders came to Club wearing all sorts of hats for hat night.
The 23rd kicked off our pantry nights as clubbers are starting to bring in nonperishable food items to help restock our church’s food pantry for the holidays.
The 30th was Fall Fun Night. We also enjoyed parties, fun and food for fall fun night.
November will focus on giving, clubbers can fill shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child, and continue bringing non-perishable food items to give love and food to the needy in our church, neighborhood,
and community for the holidays.
There will be NO club on Wednesday, November 27 a time that we should all slow down and celebrate with our family and friends. Club will resume Wednesday, December 4, where we will also open the 1st Awana store of the year for clubbers to get their “Shop On”!
We are grateful that our church supports Awana as we can see God working in clubbers' lives. Thank you to all who help clubbers learn God’s word, so they can hide it in their hearts and apply it to their daily lives!
We ask that you continue to partner with us by praying for everyone involved in Club and that we’ll reach clubbers and their families through the teaching and memorization of God's Word, and for future clubbers.
Thank you for your continued support in this ministry!
Because Kids matter to God!

Here at SRBC, we collect a Fellowship Offering on the 3rd Sunday of every month. This offering is used for emergency needs and financial assistance for those in need. This has been a great ministry of our church through the years, and we just want to remind you that we are continuing to collect this offering. There is a basket marked Fellowship Fund on the table at the back of the sanctuary or you may send in your offering specified as Fellowship Fund.
We still focus on the offering on the 3rd Sunday, but you may give at any time.
It's almost time! Yes, it's almost time for SRBC's annual Children's Christmas program! It’s quickly approaching, and is scheduled for Sunday, December 8, at 7 pm! Please mark your calendars and join us!
All children ages 3 through 6th grade at SRBC are invited to be a part of the 2024 Christmas Program! We’re practicing each Sunday during the Children's Church portion of the morning service. It is very important that your child be at as many practices as possible. It’s not too late to become a part of this program which will be performed Sunday Evening, December 8 at 7 pm, with refreshments to follow.
