Parents’ Page - February 2019
This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you. John 15:12
From your Administrator – Mia Lynch
Wow! January has been a rough weather month. Remember February is also notorious for snow. If most of the school districts close or on a delay watch the school postings on WHIO TV station, radio 1290 or their website and now WDTN TV listings. WHIO also has a school closing app for your phone. If the districts are on a 2 hour delay, we will be on a 1 hour delay which means we will open at 9:30 a.m. Keep checking the listings until 8 a.m. because delays can turn into closings.
This month you’ll hear lots of talk about friendship and love… love of family, love of friends and especially, love of God…as the children get ready for St. Valentine’s Day. The teachers would like to remind you not to address valentines to specific students. Since the children can’t read, it is easier for them to give out their valentines unassisted, if it just has their name on the cards. Watch your Teacher’s bulletin board for party dates.
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be February 28 and March 1st. Please check your Teachers’ bulletin board for a sign-up sheet. We ask that you find a baby sitter for your conference time as it is difficult to discussion the evaluation with children interrupting. Maybe you can make arrangements for another mother to watch your child or children and you do the same for her. We do not have school on conference days.
ALUMNI REGISTRATION
We are getting calls and giving preschool tours to new families interested in enrolling their children for the fall term. It’s not too early to think about your plans for the coming school year. Alumni registration will begin after the Parent/Teacher Conferences. For returning students, parents do not have to fill in new registration papers. Come to the office and check the current information we have on file, make any corrections, sign, change date to 2019 and pay the registration fee. March 6th we begin open enrollment. As you know, some classes go fast than others, the sooner you get your registration in the better chance you get the class of your choice. The fees remain the same: registration $40, supply $60 and Mon/Wed/Fri $150.00, Mon-Thurs $200.00, and Mon-Fri $260. 00(This will be contingent upon getting 12 or more students registered for Tue/Thurs in the Pre-K and Middlers’ classes and 8 for the Beginners’ class.)
To continue with a little explanation on how some of the activities we do here help your child learn. This month is the benefits of Block play. I came across some articles on this subject in a NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) journal and a North Shore Pediatric Therapy study. Blocks help children development in all areas. Playing with blocks requires fine and gross motor skills, which strengthens hand muscles for writing. They enhance problem-solving by manipulating space and objects. This activity encourages math concepts through counting, comparing lengths and widths, names of shapes, how to combine certain geometric shapes to make other shapes and basic addition. It encourages language and literacy by encouraging children to talk about their creations, learning new vocabulary words and sequencing. There is a social and emotional component when children work together sharing ideas, taking turns and learning clean-up responsibilities. Imagination and creativity is also important factor when they can make their visions concrete and combine and recombine loose parts in countless ways. Self esteem should also be included because block play encourage pride in one’s accomplishments.

February is the month of hearts and valentines. As we continue to make our way through the second half of the school year, we will focus on reviewing what we have already touched on; the alphabet, numbers, shapes, colors, patterns, and comparing sizes small, medium, large and opposites.
This is Dental Health Awareness Month. We will focus on healthy foods and how to care for our teeth.
We will celebrate Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, February 13th with special Valentine snacks. Look for a sign-up sheet on the board outside the classroom for what you may bring in. Please send Valentines signed by your child (we can’t stress enough to let your child sign their own name for practice) but do not addressed them to the other students. This will make it easy for your child to pass out their own cards at circle time.
Parent/Teacher Conferences are Thursday, February 28th and Friday, March 1st. A sign-up sheet will be posted with time slots for you to choose from. If you cannot attend on either of these days, we will make arrangements for a phone conference. Conferences are mandatory by the State of Ohio, so let us know how we can help you. Please do not bring other children to the conference. This is a time to discuss your students progress without interruptions.
Warm Winter Blessings,
Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Misutka

There are probably some growth spurts taking place with all the students. Please check the size of the clothes your child has in their change of clothes bag at school. You may need to switch them out for a larger size.
