But neither of these approaches provide a cure to the allergy. The cure for allergies is actually found in exposing yourself to your allergens in small doses. A doctor will prick your forearm in different places with different allergens to see what you will react to. That testing might seem like cruel and unusual punishment. But really, it is a form of reverse engineering. By a gradual exposure in small doses to the things that makes your body react, you can develop an immunity to those things.
This makes me think of fears that we might have. While it may seem to make sense that the best way to overcome our fears is to avoid those things we are afraid of, in reality we overcome by exposing ourselves to those things we fear.
The cure for fear of failure is not success. It is in having
failed and seeing that you have made your way past the failure. The cure for fear of rejection is not acceptance; it is in having been rejected and learning that it is not the end of the world.
The cure for the fear of death is in dying to yourself and learning that life is found through faith in Jesus Christ.
I Peter 1:6-7 says, “In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith, of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire, may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.”
With love, Pastor Scott
