The “flu” is short for influenza, which is actually the Italian word for “influence.” The word influenza was introduced into English in the mid-1700s, from the identification of the malady called “influenza di freddo,” meaning “the influence of the cold.”
It became evident that the flu could have a profound impact on all of society. Its influence was indisputable. The spreading of disease would occur mostly
by decisions made by those who had been infected, perhaps unconsciously, but still choices made that would spread germs to those previously uninfected. None of us would want to be the source of this kind of negative influence.
Our faith in Jesus is also something that can be contagious. It, too, is something that can spread through families, classrooms and workplaces. However, the spreading of this influence is something of which we should be delighted to be the source.
While the verbal sharing of our testimony can be a primary way to spread the contagion of Christianity, it is even more likely that our faith will spread to others due to the decisions that we make.
The example that we set with our Christian lifestyle, the choices that we make to avoid sinful environments, the protection that we seek through studying God's Word and fellowship with God's people: these are the things that will influence those around us.
If you have been infected with Covid, the flu or a cold, then you of course are informed enough to do what you can not to spread that infection to others. On the other hand, if you have been “infected” by Jesus, if He has permeated your life and you are controlled by His Spirit, then do all that you can to spread that influence to others. By your words, yes, but also by your example, be a contagious Christian!
With love, Pastor Scott

AWANA MINUTE
It is truly amazing how quickly the year is flying by. It seems like we were just celebrating the New Year and here it is
February already, anybody see January, it seems to be gone?
God continues to bless the Awana Ministry here at SRBC. The Year 2021 was filled with many challenges that are continuing into 2022’s club year. Still, we remain committed to serve and honor our Lord in teaching and reaching the kids of our neighborhoods and community thru this important ministry. We are truly blessed!
We arrived back to club January 5 after a holiday break from club spending time with family, zooming with friends, and playing with new toys etc.
Clubbers got back to the business at hand, of learning and reciting Bible verses, completing sections, and playing games. January 19, Clubbers arrived dressed and ready for layer night our January theme. They dressed in as many layers of clothes and accessories as they could either find, and/or walk/waddle to club. Many layers were worn in, requiring many bags to carry them back home.
One clubber was counted as wearing 59 layers, whew, glad it was a cold
day outside.
February. 2 Clubbers are scheduled to arrive wearing their favorite NFL gear and most importantly bringing cans of soup to help refill our Church’s food pantry. This “Soup ’er’ bowl” theme night focuses not on football, but on needy families right here in our community.
We are looking forward to another exciting year, one where we hope to see many clubbers become disciples for Christ. This cannot happen without the faithful leaders and listeners answering God’s call and serving him thru this ministry. Let us pray for our leaders and listeners as we attempt to bring the word of God to young lives from our church & community, with the gospel of Christ and train them to serve him!
Cool with Christ,
