Jesus told us that we cannot serve two masters. (Matt. 6:24, Luke 16:13) James tells us that we are not to be “double-minded.” (James 4:8) In our hearts, we know that this is wise counsel and solid truth. We know that if we don't serve God, we will only be serving something else.
But still, we try. We try to pull off the impossible by being good Christians,
but still loving the world. Ronald Rolheiser, in his book, The Holy Longing,
put it this way:
“We want to be a saint, but we also want to feel every sensation experienced by sinners; we want to be innocent and pure, but we also want to be experienced and taste all of life; we want to serve the poor and have a simple lifestyle, but we also want all the comforts of the rich; we want to have the depth afforded by solitude, but we also do not want to miss anything; we want to pray, but we also want to watch television, read, talk to friends, and go out.
It’s a small wonder that life is often a trying enterprise, and that we are often tired and pathologically overextended.”
If you are like me, you struggle with wanting the best of both worlds, to be “in the world, but not of the world.” After all, you can't “spiritualize” everything. You have to live life in our cultural setting and deal with nonspiritual people daily. So how do you do that without compromising your faith and your Christian values?
The answer is not easy, but it is simple. It is that we take Jesus with us wherever we go and whatever we do. Even when we are in the world, with worldly people, doing necessary worldly things, we remember that Jesus is there beside us and He changes the way we think and how we act, and He is the One we are serving.
And if we truly do that, then there will be a distinct difference in those things we allow ourselves to experience, to taste, and to watch. There will be a difference in how you spend your time and the things you say and the places
you go.
Will you join me in trying harder to remember this?
With love,
