Your part: Keep yourself yielded to Him.


Qualities of a yielded heart
1. Thankfulness (vs. 1-2)
Remember that He is the source for every good thing in your life.


2. Humility (vs. 6)
Part of being humble means accepting the fact that you won't get all the credit you deserve and that's OK.
If you're constantly fighting for you own glory, God can't work out His plan for your life.


3. Trust (vs. 7)
We live with the assurance that says, “God will take care of me.”
Holmes- “the great act of faith is when a man decides he is not God.”

Jeroboam's sin (and ours)
1. The origin is in the heart. (vs. 26)
You can stop sin in its tracks when you catch it at the thought level.


2. Sin is always self-centered. (vs. 27)
When you are thinking about God or about others, it's almost impossible to sin.


3. Actions are supposedly for the good of others. (vs. 28)
We deceive others, or even ourselves, into believing that what we are doing is for the benefit of others, when all it is about is getting something we want.


4. Sin is disobedience to God's commandments. (vs. 29)
The Bible is our textbook of righteousness.


5. Sin becomes a snare to others. (vs. 30)
It either causes them to be tempted to do the same thing, or brings them into the consequences of what your sin has done to you.


6. Sin compromises integrity. (vs. 31)
Your regard for purity and the standards of God are weakened when you permit sin into your life.


7. Sin has the appearance of being right. (vs. 32)
We replace a healthy relationship with the living Savior with a religion that has a good appearance.

What sin does
1. It distorts our view of reality
John 9: we must become blind to really see.

Ephesians 4:18-19 “They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.”

Romans 6:23- The effects of sin are the same. But God's gift means that death can't hurt us!

Four gospels
1. The gospel of the kingdom (Mt. 4:23 9:35, Mark 1:14)

A kingdom consists of a king, a place and a people.
Jesus is our king. He established His rule in our hearts.
We are His chosen people through faith.


2. The gospel of salvation (Rom. 1:16; I Cor. 15:1-5)

The offer is not so much of a king, but of a Savior.

3 components
a. the death of Jesus – an absolute necessity for our salvation
b. the burial of Jesus – the symbolic meaning of baptism
c. the resurrection of Jesus – the foundation of our salvation


3. Another gospel (II Cor. 11:3; Gal. 1:6)

The best way for our enemy to turn us away is to attract us to something else that seems like good news.

Traditions and rituals can easily replace the heart of the true gospel. (Gal. 1:8; II John 1:10)


4. The everlasting gospel (Rev. 14:6-7)

This is the final call for sinners to repent and worship.
God is not only Ruler, not only Savior, but He is our Sovereign Judge.
