vs. 5- “Your attitude should be the same as Christ Jesus.”
So we say:
1. “The world doesn't revolve around me.” (the attitude of Selflessness)

Many try to win respect by demanding it.
Just because you have obtained authority doesn't mean that you have won respect.
You win respect by giving it.


2. “I will help wherever I am needed.” (the attitude of Service)

three attitudes of service
a. reaching up - ingratiating
b. reaching down- condescending
c. reaching out- attitude of Christ

Foster- there is a difference between self-righteous service and true service.


3. “If I have to suffer for what is right, I will.” (the attitude of Sacrifice)
We are to consider our lives as being spent for God.
Elliot- “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.”

When you have gained respect from others, then you open the door to sharing your faith.

conscience- an inborn sense of “oughtness”
Romans 2:15- the law of God is written on our heart.

formation of the conscience
1. teaching you received from your parents
2. customs of the community
3. thinking, habits, actions of your peer group
4. content of your chosen environment

Therefore, your conscience is not infallible.
could be weak or defiled (8:7)
​could be seared as with a hot iron (I Tim. 4:2)
could be corrupted (Titus 1:15)


Main thrust
To try to convince others to go against their own conscience is wrong. (Romans 14:14
Going against your conscience opens the door to direct rebellion against God.
The way to get rid of false guilt is to develop a Christian conscience.


A Christian conscience is formed by Christian parents.
A Christian conscience is formed by Christian customs.
A Christian conscience is formed by Christian peer groups.
A Christian conscience is formed by a Christian environment.


A Christian conscience will prevent you from being legalistic and will make you more sensitive to the
needs of others.  

the hate of God- a righteous and extreme aversion toward what is harmful to and wrong for His beloved creation.


1. haughty eyes
Pride is what keeps us away from God. (Is. 14:13-14; Prov. 21:4, Ps. 131:1-2)


2. a lying tongue ((Jn.8:44; 14:6; Titus 1:2; Heb. 6:18)
To lie is to respond to a situation in a way other than God's way.
Lying is something that happens in this short, temporary existence. (Prov. 12:19; 21:6)


3. hands that shed innocent blood
The difference is found in the attitude and motivations of those doing the killing.


4. a heart that devises wicked schemes
One sin is not worse than another, but one heart can be more corrupt than another. (James 1:14)


5. feet that are quick to rush into evil
God hates deliberate rebellion, when we purposefully choose evil over good.


6. a false witness who pours out lies
A witness is someone whose sole purpose is to tell the truth. (John 8:14-18)


7. a man who stirs up dissension among his brothers.
Dissension in a church is one of the most devastating things that can happen.


We want to do what is pleasing to God.  

1. Believing is a lot like being born. (John 3)
Jesus didn't answer “how,” He answered “why.”
a. A new believer is thrust into a new exciting world.
b. A new believer needs to be cared for and properly nurtured.


2. Believing is a lot like taking a drink. (John 4)
a. You first acknowledge that you need Him.
b. It isn't the water that quenches your thirst, it is the drinking of it.


3. Believing is a lot like walking. (John 5)
It is up to us to take advantage of all that God has done for us.


4. Believing is a lot like eating. (John 6)
a. To believe in Christ is to partake of Him.
b. He becomes a part of who you are.


5. Believing is a lot like seeing. (John 9)
Faith doesn't ask “how,” it answers “why.”


6. Believing is a lot like opening a door. (John 10)
Believing is necessary to enter in where God is.
