I John 5:13-18
1. If you have placed your hopes for heaven entirely on Jesus
It depends on whether or not you rest in His finished work.
He saves us not because we trust in a symbol, but because we trust in a Savior.
Do you believe in the authority of the name of the One who went to the cross for you?
2. You have a new nature.
When that has happened, you know it. (Romans 8:16)
With a new nature comes new desires.
Your new nature is not demonstrated by never falling, but by what you do when you do fall.
Possibilities for verses 16-17
a. sin that leads to physical death
The wages of sin is death. We don't have any right to ask God to change that truth.
b. sin that leads to spiritual death. There's no point in praying that God will relax His standards for salvation.
The ultimate point is not confusing. You can know if you are saved.
Two questions to be answered
1. What do you believe about Jesus?
2. Do you have a new nature?
