Nehemiah 7:1-4
The family is a wall for our society, much like the wall for the city of Jerusalem. The wall is necessary for protection, an identity, and to have definable boundaries.
Each gate in the wall represented a weakness or vulnerability to the city.
Gates of vulnerability
1. Horse Gate – represents conflicts
keys to dealing with conflicts
a. acceptance-every family has conflicts
b. accessibility- when time arises for reconciliation, you will be there.
2. Dung Gate – the gate that must be opened for the family to survive is forgiveness.
If we don't let go of the grudges, none of that dirt can be swept out of our lives.
3. Valley Gate – the demand for our priorities
Sooner of later, you have to make a statement about what is most important to you.
4. Old Gate – rather than replacing it, they restored it.
One thing we can do to rebuild the wall of the family is to have more respect for the elderly.
5. Water Gate – represents voluntary servanthood
For the family to survive, somebody has to serve. (Matthew 20:26)
