Aspects of James' and John's relationship with Christ
1. Intimacy
Mark 5:35-43 – Intimacy with Christ means sharing His power.
Mark 9:2-9 – Intimacy with Christ means sharing His glory.
2. Ambition
Why they thought they deserved such honor
a. kind of men they were- “Boanerges”
b. sons of Zebedee- well-to-do
c. may have been relatives of Jesus
d. Part of the inner circle
thought power was an exclusive thing, but actually for all who trust in the name of Jesus(Mark 9:38-9)
thought power was for punishment , but actually for salvation (Luke 9:51ff)
intimacy with Christ also means sharing His sufferings (Mark 14:32ff)
3. Service
Like oxen-ready for either
James went to the altar
John went to the plow
Both drank the cup Jesus drank.
